Recently, a company that I operated for over 4 years had to be placed on automatic pilot and no longer was a profitable business model.  In 2006 it was a cutting-edge concept which utilized the latest technologies to teach the ever-evolving pool of licensed real estate brokers and agents around the country how to not only to hone their skills and adapt to the changing residential real estate and mortgage industries, but to also adapt the the significant changes in technology that accompanied this shift.  Sadly, in the past 2 years the real estate market throughout the USA has not only declined, but has left many hard-working professionals out of a job.  However, it’s not likely for reasons you’d think.

According to Realtor.org, the country’s foremost authority and most highly-recognized designation in residential real estate, the median age of real estate agents around the nation is 52.  As much as one would assume that the decline in Realtors over the past few years is due to the over-abundance of inventory and the lack of consumers seeking to purchase real estate it seems that there is a relationship between a professionals’ age and their ability to adapt to new technological shifts.  Baby Boomers around the world operate a great portion of the businesses that are propping up the nation’s economy yet they are the last age bracket to embrace and adapt to the recent evolution in advertising, marketing, and the technology that goes along with it.

Business executives, entrepreneurs, and managers around the globe are experiencing a phenomenon directly associated with the sufferings experienced during the global economic downturn.  Buzz words and trendy terminology are thrown around so fast that by the time the average person figures it out it’s passe’.  Here’s a test to determine how “in-the-know” you are when it comes to technology:

  • You still use the term ‘Information Highway’ = You were trying to keep up in the 90′s and flat out gave up after that.
  • You use anything EXCEPT Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or IE’s latest web browser to surf the web = Hey, at least you’re surfing.  You just need a new surf board.
  • There is a dial-up tone when you connect to the Internet = Sorry Grandpa, I didn’t mean to single you out.
  • You know what the term “Web 2.0” stands for = You are now catching up with the current times.
  • You actively participate in web forums and you maintain a blog = Getting warmer….
  • You know what the term “digital media marketing” refers to and you understand the potential power it holds = Welcome to the present.
  • You have a full-time SEO expert that you work with, actively engage on social media sites, and have read Tribes (PS, there’s a special download included in this hyperlink to Seth Godin’s web page) = We should have coffee sometime because you are clearly a leader in the business world and I’d love to talk to you more.

Since the title of this post is “Vision” it only seems appropriate at this time that I share the vision of our blog with you here.  Over the upcoming months and years it’s our goal to discuss the most innovative uses for online digital media for business purposes on the web and to share them here.  We look forward to identifying the ways company’s and entrepreneurs are using new forms of technology, marketing techniques that accompany them, and ways that other businesses can take advantage of the many opportunities that exist through online channels.
